Black Earth Meats

Black Earth Meat Market

Black Earth Meat Market is a USDA, certified humane slaughter and processing plant located just outside of Madison, Wisconsin. Our focus is on local meats, with subspecialties in grass fed and organic agriculture. We know from personal experience that the quality of meat from animals raised on pasture and in small groups is much higher than the feedlot meats coming from the large packing houses. From our animals to our employees, we are a local operation employing 20 folks from our community. All of our animals are purchased from nearby farmers who raise them in a healthier way.

Lamb

Grassland Country Dorpers

Grassland Country Dorpers

For the last 14 years we have been an eclectic all natural family farm. Among other animals, we raise Dorper / Kahtadin-cross meat sheep. We do not use growth hormones, and our animals are raised all naturally and grass-fed on our chemical free pastures, supplemented by minerals, and hay (raised by us) in the winter. These lambs have more hind muscling, and the meat is lean, extremely tender and very mild in flavor. When you purchase meat from us, you are helping to sustain local, small-farm agriculture.

Milk

Sassy Cow Creamery

Sassy Cow Creamery

Sassy Cow Creamery is a new farmstead dairy built in 2007 by third generation dairy farmers James and Robert Baerwolf and their families. The Baerwolf’s love for dairying has propelled them into establishing two distinct herds: a 400-cow traditional dairy and a 100-cow organic dairy, located within miles of each other. Sassy Cow bottles the milk of the individual herds at their farmstead dairy. Products include whole, 2%, 1% and fat free milk in gallons, half gallons and pints. Chocolate and strawberry milk, as well as cream are also available. The dairy also crafts ice cream in a variety of flavors.

JR’s Country Acres

Howdy! We are a small four generation family owned business and proud to provide you with naturally grown and produced eggs. While our farm is not a “Certified Organic Farm,” we are currently using organic farming techniques and philosophies. Our “girls” enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset and a protective shelter at night. In addition to the Rhode Island Red chickens, we have eight beautiful varieties of Heritage breeds. We like the fact that some of these breeds are considered rare and that we are helping to preserve and maintain them.
